Facebook Hits 600 Million Users

facebook mark zuckerberg

It wasn’t that long ago that I saw the movie “The Social Network”, and was thoroughly impressed when they reached the 1 million user mark. To now see Facebook’s growth in the real world and how it has been able to reach 600 million users is simply staggering. This milestone serves as a remind to marketers and small business owners everywhere – get your act on Facebook together. It will be interesting to see what Facebook places does for local search marketing when you have that many users. Facebook places will threaten both Foursquare and Google’s efforts because of its vast user base, and not to mention the prevalence of log in with facebook buttons all across the web.

Social Authority Helps Boost Your Rankings

It has long been suspected by many SEO’s that social media would have a direct effect on your standing in the SERPS ( Search Engine Result Pages). Danny Sullivan’s interview now decisively confirms this as it comes straight from both Google and Bing.

2) Do you try to calculate the authority of someone who tweets that might be assigned to their Twitter page. Do you try to “know,” if you will, who they are?

Bing:
Yes. We do calculate the authority of someone who tweets. For known public figures or publishers, we do associate them with who they are. (For example, query for Danny Sullivan)
Google:
Yes we do compute and use author quality. We don’t know who anyone is in real life :-)

I am very excited about this confirmation personally, as it shows a shift in SEO from straight backlink building and technical wizardry to a more editorial shift that rewards great content and authorities within an industry or niche. Translation: Less Spam – Maybe.

People don’t share, or like spam and useless information. I know if I came across a poorly written article or blog that was made solely for SEO purposes, I probably would not retweet or share it amongst my friends. Randfish from SEOmoz does a very good job of explaining this in much more detail.

Google and Bing have made it very clear: start utilizing Twitter and Facebook or face falling behind in the ever changing game of SEO.
